Founded in 1985 as the Capital Men’s Senior Golf Association at Sonny Guy Municipal Golf Course on Woodrow Wilson in Jackson, MS. Our original founders had a vision to form a new concept of Senior Men aged 50 older to compete in a fun environment around Metro Jackson area. There were established basic rules of individual play with all handicap players welcome to share in common values and camaraderie to build a tradition of friendships that carry on for the next 39 years and counting.
In 1970 a milestone occurred, Pete Brown who once caddied at our founder’s home course Sonny Guy Municipal became the first African American PGA player to win the San Diego Andy Williams tour event at Torrey Pines in a playoff victory over Tony Jacklin! During his career from 1963-1985 Mr. Brown played in 282 events, making 111 cuts with total earnings of $128,995. In 2020, Pete Brown was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Museum. To commemorate this achievement our founding golf course was renamed Pete Brown Municipal.
Around 1990, our name changed to Jackson Senior Men’s Golf Association as our membership flourished for decades growing to over 250+ active members from all walks of life. Popularity grew quickly as our tour stops continued to expand to eventually cause our teams to split up into two consecutive days to meet the popular demand for all players to be able to play golf. Annual Christmas party socials were celebrated in grand fashion for many years with our wives & guests at various host golf clubs along our tours journey.
Our focus on community involvement included volunteering in early 2000 at the Southern Farm Bureau and Viking Classic PGA stops at Annandale GC. In 2013, Sanderson Farms became the sponsor, and the PGA tournament was moved to Jackson Country Club as we continued our volunteering to give back to our community while supporting Century Club Charities showcased by Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital
In 2020, our Facebook social media page was launched to showcase our many fun events and highlight the winners by flights. In 2022, we changed our name to Central Mississippi Senior Men’s Golf Association to reflect the wide range of tour stops beyond Jackson Metro while representing our diverse membership of 139 players in 2023.
The future is promising as we continue the legacy handed down 39 years ago by our founders as our new tagline states “Genuine Gentlemen Golfers” which says it all!
